KOREAN DRIVING LICENCE

TELEPHONE                   055 240 8100

ADDRESS                       90-1 Jinbuksan-upro, Jindongmyeon, Habpogu, Masansi.

During the first year of residency in Korea, it is permitted to use an international driver's licence. However, after the first year, Korean law requires that you have a Korean driving licence. This can be obtained in Masan-si about 60 minutes drive from Okpo.  Bring your drivers' licence (international licence if you have one), three passport photos, passport, alien registration card, W12.500 and most importantly, a  document from your Embassy with an official stamp on it confirming that your licence is genuine.  The EMBASSY STAMP is very important!

You will have to take a quick sight and colour blindness test after the application has been approved. The whole process takes about an hour.

Your original driving licence will be kept at this office until you need it if travelling abroad, unless you provide a ticket or travel document when applying for the Korean drivers' licence.  To get your original licence back you must visit in person with your travel documents, alien registration card, Korean drivers' licence and your passport.  Once you have your original licence you do not need to visit this office again.

PARKING

Most places have free parking.  At the supermarket you can park for up to one hour for free, but be prepared that sometimes the car park barriers will be down and you will have to produce your shopping receipt to exit the car park for free.  If you have no receipt they will charge you for parking.

Along the shopping streets you pay an attendant for parking.  The attendant will leave a note on your screen with your arrival time. When you  leave they appear and tell you how much to pay. This is generally W1000 per 30 minutes.  Parking is free where there is no attendant.  At night time parking is free.

There are also small Parking lots around.  You can find a space to park but on busy days the car attendant may park the vehicle for you.  Do not be surprised if you are requested to leave your keys in the car. This just means the attendant can double park your car and move it when necessary.
